Not Wanted On The Voyage



Northwestern’s Department of Theatre, the Music Theatre Program and the American Music Theatre Project are excited to announce two new Winter Quarter classes for 2010 that engage with AMTP’s development of NOT WANTED ON THE VOYAGE, the new musical by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill. Faculty member Amanda Dehnert will teach both sections.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:

* The class is open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors.
* The class is by permission only.
* The class has two sections and those sections share a required lab time.
* A student may only participate in one section.
* If you are interested, you MUST sign up for one of the INFO SESSION times on Saturday, November 7 between 9 am – 12 pm
* Sign-ups are posted on the AMTP callboard in TIC.

NOT WANTED ON THE VOYAGE: WORKSHOP STAGING IN MUSICAL THEATRE

Class: MO, TU, TH 5:00 – 5:50 pm
Lab: FR 2:00 – 4:50 pm

In this class we will be working on the techniques the musical theatre
actor uses while creating a workshop staging of a new musical, Not
Wanted On The Voyage (Neil Bartram/Brian Hill, based on the novel by
Timothy Findley). The class will cover techniques of self-staging,
rehearsal, preparation, and performance through creating a workshop
staging of Not Wanted On The Voyage.

INTERESTED?: Sign up for an INFO SESSION on Saturday, November 7 between 9 am – 12 pm. Students interested in Section 24 will sing at the info session.

SECTION 25
NOT WANTED ON THE VOYAGE: CHARACTER CREATION

Class: TH 3:00 – 5:50 pm
Lab: FR 2:00 – 4:50 pm

In this class we will be working on techniques of physicalization and
clowning/character creation to devise the animal kingdom as
represented in the new musical, Not Wanted on the Voyage (Neil
Bartram/Brian Hill, based on the novel by Timothy Findley). The class
will use movement, improvisation, mask work, and other techniques of
physicalization and vocalization to create a society of animals,
culminating in a workshop staging of the piece.

MEET OUR GUEST ARTISTS...

Neil Bartram and Brian Hill
Neil Bartram is the recipient of a Dramatists Guild Jonathan Larson Fellowship and the Jonathan Larson Foundation award. He and writer/director Brian Hill have collaborated on the development of The Nightingale and the Rose and Clara’s Piano, workshopped in 2008 by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival with director/conceiver Susan Schulman. They are the creative team of The Story of My Life which gained recognition through the NAMT Festival of New Musicals and received a workshop production at Goodspeed. The Story of My Life had its Broadway premiere in February 2009 directed by Richard Maltby, Jr. and starring Malcolm Gets and Will Chase. For more information, visit www.bartramandhill.com.

Matt Hawkins
Matt Hawkins last collaborated with Amanda Dehnert on Northwestern’s production of Peter Pan. He is a founding member of The House Theatre of Chicago and has directed in Chicago for Side Project, The Neo-Futurists, Redmoon, and The House. He has created Fight Choreography/Movement for Chicago Shakespeare, Lookingglass, Writer’s Theatre, American Theatre Company, The Court Theatre, the American Music Theatre Project, The House, Steep Theatre, Signal Ensemble and Northwestern University. As an actor, Matt has appeared at Steppenwolf with 500 Clown, Chicago Sheakspeare, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Redmoon. He has worked with The Kennedy Center, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Conservatory at Act One Studio, University of Chicago and Old Town School of Folk Music. Matt is an Artistic Associate and Resident Director with Strawdog, the recipient of two Non-Equity Jeff Awards and a graduate of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University.
